    1883 Brooklyn Bridge & Singer Sewing Machine Trade Card, Chicago Fire Reference
    Description
    1883 Singer Sewing Machine Company Victorian trade card celebrating the opening of the new Brooklyn Bridge between New York City and Brooklyn.  It also makes an interesting reference to the Chicago Fire of 1871 on the verso.  Good condition with light overall aging/light soiling, edges/corners lightly rubbed/bumped, one tiny tear at top edge.  Measures 3 1/4 x 4 7/8 inches.

    1.  Companies have sprung up in every part of the Union for making an “Imitation Singer Machine.”
    Why are not similar companies formed for making Imitations of other sewing machines?
    The public will draw its on inference.  Gold is continually counterfeited; brass and tin never!
    2.  The Singer has taken the First Prize over all competitors more than Two Hundred Times.  Why?
    3.  After the Chicago Fire the Relief Committee undertook to furnish sewing machines to the needy women of that city.  Applicants were permitted to choose From sixteen different kinds of machines.  2,944 applicants were furnished with machines.
    2,427 chose Singer Machines
    235 chose Wheeler & Wilson
    127 chose Howe
    30 chose Wileox (sic) & Gibbs
    5 chose Wilson
    2 chose Davis
    118 distributed their choice among ten other kinds of machines.
    These girls were to earn their living on these machines.  Why did they take Singers?
