Vintage/1931 Horsman BABY BUTTERCUP Doll~16" Composition with Cloth Body

Description

From a local estate, this auction offers a sweet vintage Horsman baby doll named "Baby Buttercup."  She is about 16" long
with composition head and limbs, and a cloth body.  The back of her head is marked "E I H CO" (E.I.Horsman Co).  Her
head has a flange attachment to the body.  She has sleep eyes, molded blonde hair, and painted open mouth (no teeth)
and eyebrows/lower lashes.  She is missing her upper eye lashes which were probably horsehair and her eyebrows have
worn off.  As you can see in the pictures, there are some cracks to the composition on her head, hands, arms, fingers, and
toes.  I would say she dates to 1931 since the earliest versions of this doll had the compisition head and limbs with the cloth
body.  She appears to have a speaker box on her back, which is not working.  The cloth body is in excellent condition.  The
dress she wears fits her so well that I think it might be original, as is her slip.  She also wears an undershirt made from a
very old A&P salt sack (marked "The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company."  Dress and slip have no snaps or buttons and
are currently closed with little safety pins.  Even with her flaws, I think she is adorable, and not a doll you will find every
day.
